So, another walkabout announcement here. Next Monday, MAY 10th. 6:30pm or so until we get bored and shuffle off. Where? The gardens outside the Indianapolis Museum of Art, somehwere on te trail near the big fountain thinger and close to the bridge thinger. Really, just look for any goobers standing around with camera bags after you park.
What you need to bring: yourself, a camera. That’s it. Free to all, no pressure. Point-and-shoot, DSLR, medium format, pinhole, whatever. Come out and take some pictures, have some fun, talk with us, walk with us, yadda yadda.

So, before we all go and forget I’m a Crumpler fan, this was a rather Crumpler morning as I swung up onto my bike, through my 7 Million Dollar Home full of this evening’s kit over my shoulder, and dangled a lightweight Crumpler tote full of essentials (water and food, so, literally essentials for once) off the handlebars and put some pedal action in to catch a ride with Nick (remember kiddies, carpooling is good for everyone, and the environment.)
Which leads us to the evening plans. Whatever idiocy and confused dates Nick mentioned in the last post, tonight is the next photo walkabout. That’ll be going down at 6:45pm at Coxhall Park in Carmel, Indiana. Grab a camera, grab a buddy, share a ride and come up and see us. Spend some time. Take some pictures. Feel free to show up early. Explore. Make mistakes. Take some winners.
So, if you’re reading this in the Indy area, make it out. Come on, make our day.

So, last night’s photo walk was a bit of bust. Nick and I apologize, that’s as much our fault as the rain’s. We hadn’t expected the rain, and didn’t plan accordingly enough time to get there so we were running 15 minutes late to our own show. No one was there when we got there, so if anyone showed up and then left, we’re sorry we missed you, but we were just going to send you home anyway. It was wet out there.
That said, after all that hassle and stress, Nick and I couldn’t stand to leave straight away, so we took my fearless E-3 out and played around in the rain a bit. The result, an incredibly silly series of portraits, some soaked clothes, and a bit of fun.
We’ll try another photo walk again soon, maybe it’ll go over better this time.
So, today is off to a drizzly gray start, but we’re still hoping it’ll clean up its act in time for our first photo walkabout of the season this evening, 6:30pm at Coxhall Park in Carmel, IN. Anyone close enough to make it obviously should, as fun and camaraderie will abound.
That’s all. No, really. Shoo. Go work for a while, then come meet us with a camera later.
Ah, the weather’s getting warm, evenings looking a bit stabler, and there’s an itching in our shutter fingers to fire these cameras back up. Which can only mean it’s time to boot the infamous Nick and Derek’s Photo Walkabout’s back up.
So, for those of you who missed them last year, here’s the skinny:
Roughly one day a week Nick and I pick somewhere public to show up with cameras. We ask and encourage any and all of you who can make it to show up there as well. We then spend an hour or two, puttering around, taking pictures, giving advice, talking equipment, trading stories, telling off-color jokes– you know, photographer stuff. We believe in a chill, personable atmosphere, so everyone of any skill level or camera type is welcome, ’cause it’s all about getting out there, scoping a new area out and seeing what you can get from it. You know, experience, practice, and maybe a little fun.
We generally keep these events free, unless you have to buy parking. But, we don’t charge any money. If people want models, Nick and I have a few connections and we’ll gladly run a pool to give them something to come out and make our photos that much more interesting. The last model we had out was wonderful, despite the shiver-inducing sub-40 weather. Brr.
So! The first Walkabout of oh-ten is going to be next Monday evening, let’s call it 6:30 so Nick and I can grab a bite to eat, up in Carmel at Coxhall Park. That’s a good week’s notice, so it should give you time to plan. It also gives us time to arrange a model, so if people want in on that let us know in the comments, on Facebook, or at [email protected] today or tomorrow and I can get ahold of some people.
Also, if you get there and we’re not thre yet, don’t scurry off. While of course supernaturally handsome, witty, and charming as any Roberts employees, we’re still subject to the same awful Indy traffic and occasionally run a little late. We try, but, well, that’s how it goes.
So, Monday April 5th. 6:30pm. Coxhall Park, Carmel, IN. We’re open to working on different days, times, etc… as needs be to best suit the most of you, but we’ll start there.
After a couple of weeks off we’ll be out again! Check the photo-calendar to confirm that yes, we’ll be going to the West Side Park in Greenwood, Indiana to start shooting Casey Monaghan in the leaves… I will finally be bringing along a lensbaby Composer in 3 mounts -4/3, Canon, and Nikon.
Next week we’re looking to hold a night shoot someplace creepy so we all can work on goosebumpy shots.
