So, if you’ve shot Nikon point-and-shoots for a while, you might be aware they come in three series: L (Life), S (Style), and P (Professional). Well, the last of those, the P series, has finally received what seems at this point like a long overdue upgrade. And, that’s it off to the side there: the Coolpix P7000.
According to Nikon, this bad boy is all new inside and out. Inside you’ll find a 10.1 megapixel CCD sensor, 5-Way VR, 720 HD, an electronic virtual horizon level, and RAW files in the NRW format (which work on both Mac and Windows, let’s hope that means lesson learned).
Outside there’s a pop-up flash, a large optical viewfinder (though, standard parallax issues will still apply), a 7.1x wide zoom (28-200mm equiv f2.8-5.6), and of course lots of direct control buttons and dials. And, there’s a Zoom Memory button so you can instantly zoom back to preset focal lengths.
There actually aren’t a lot of gimmicks to discuss here, and it seems Nikon has opted to focus on the usual features, image quality, and control ergonomics. We approve. For those of you looking for a compact that lets you make the decisions, this is a nice addition to the landscape.
It’ll run close to $500 retail, and should start trickling around this month. You can get on our preorder list for one on our site now.
Oh, press release after the jump. Right right.

According to Imaging Resource, who we would trust with our lives, Nikon has updated the firmware to their Coolpix S3000 and S4000 point-and-shoots. Both firmwares fix an issue with the battery and charging, and the S4000 bumps the 720p recording mode’s frame rate up to 30fps from 24fps.
The other new Coolpix models include the following models:
