Canon’s New Bottom Line: The Powershot A800

Well, here’s one you probably never expected, Canon today has announced a quartet of new A-series point-and-shoots, and they start out with a retail price of $89.97. Yup, finally dropped under 100 clam for a brand-new compact camera. Sure, it’s pretty run-of-the-mill, 3.3x optical zoom, 10 megapixels, a 2.5″ LCD, AA power and ISO up to 1600. No really eye-turning features, except the price tag. Canon’s A series, while once a clear sign you were getting a camera that ran on AA’s (those waters have been muddied by a few A cameras with proprietary packs now), now represents Canon’s budget line. But, they’re also extremely well-liked across the board and have proven reliable shooters for countless generations. So, if not memorable, the A800 promises to be at the least quite competent. And cheap, did we mention cheap?

And look, more pictures! Well, after the jump, anyway.

It’s worth noting that Canon’s press kit provided the three colors below, but on the A800 product page it shows silver instead of the blue-ish color. We’re not sure what’s up with that and are looking into it, we’ll keep you posted.
